When immersed in an ice bath your blood vessels narrow, decreasing blood flow to your muscles – which can result in a reduction in inflammation. This has been shown to be an effective method, particularly for treating swelling and inflammation following an injury and can also reduce recovery time. Many also use ice baths for inflammation post-exercise too.
In regards to using ice baths for chronic inflammation, whilst there is limited research, findings do suggest that ice baths may be effective in helping chronic inflammation.
