“You put your body in the (cold) water, what it gives is a really strong sympathetic response. This is a stressful situation so your body goes into fight or flight mode. Your blood pressure goes up, heart rate goes up, stress hormones, all those kind of things. When you do it regularly, you start adapting to that. Once you adapt and stay in the physiological zone, your peak goes down and your baseline level of inflammation or stress goes down… Cold water can also have a direct effect on the parasympathetic nervous system which reduces inflammation over the short term.” – Dr Mark Harper
