7 Most Common Mistakes Mums and Dads make With Their Health.

By: Alex Tyson

It is pretty clear that the as we age, our health trends downward. I mean, it’s not like we want to become unhealthy, yet that is the path most of us unwittingly head down. So why do we all ended up in a poor state of heath the older we get

Below are some common mistakes and problems our customers encounter as they age which leave them looking for a solution, looking for us. Most of our clients come to us because they want to reduce pain, lose weight and sleep better. We help them do that.

  1. We prioritise everyone and everything over our self. If you’re flying in a plane and it starts going down, we’re instructed to fit our own oxygen mask first before helping others. The logic stands right? How can we begin to help others if we pass out due to lack of oxygen first? Yet when it comes to our lives and our loved ones, we almost ALWAYS fit other people’s oxygen masks first. ‘I’ll be fine’ we say to ourselves. We soldier on. We keep on  We continue to serving others and never take 5 minutes to just be; to sit within our self and see what we need. This often leads to emotional eating or sitting in front of the tv completely zonked at the end of the day because we have given so much to others and nothing to our self, searching for enjoyment through external sources. our motivation lowers and therefore our exercise decreases, we begin over-eating things we shouldn’t be, we feel like we can never relax and we sense a lack of fulfilment. It means we never have any time to sort out our health when things do start to go wrong, or worse, never have time to start looking after yourself in the first place.
Now that doesn’t mean we should have told our kids to make their own dinner whilst we lavished on a gourmet meal for one. It just means every now and then we are allowed to focus on our self. This is time to relax, take 5, maybe even learn about healthy habits or infrared saunas ;)By filling up our own cup with relaxation, love, peace, good health and energy, our cup can overflow to others around us. We can’t truly love if we don’t love our self first and we can’t truly look after others if we don’t look after our self first. Make yourself and your health a priority.
  2. We never put value in learning what is a healthy lifestyle for humans. We were taught a different message. We are brought up being told that we need to study, get a job, buy a house and get married so we have money and a family to retire with. Where is the part about looking after our body? Where is the bit that explains if we become chronically ill it will affect our money, our family and our entire life. Putting value in and learning about healthy habits and rituals is not something we are taught. And the minimal stuff we are taught: we need to exercise, drink plenty of water, not much alcohol, go to bed early and eat healthy food; most of us don’t practice. Start to put value in little healthy habits. Make the connection that small healthy habits we do result in overall improvement in our lives.
  3. Always relying on the media for health information. I mean, who has time to google the micro-nutrient composition of celery juice and learn why it is so good for the body? We’re focused on the ‘more important’ things like earning money and making a living for our self. So when it comes to increasing our understanding of health, the only real source is the media. Unfortunately though, the media is the worst source of health information. One minute vitamins are good, then they’re bad, wait no they’re good again. Is salt good or bad for you? What kind of salt?
‘I hear pink salt is good?’ we ask.
‘I saw it at coles but it’s expensive.’
This is the sort of conversation we have… we just don’t know. Angelina Jole has made people think that breast removal is a great solution for breast cancer, there are newspaper reports saying that vegemite is healthy (it’s not) and no one knows whether we should get a flu shot or not. No wonder were so confused about where to start when our health begins to turn.
  4. After we start taking on health information from the media, we start to think‘yeah i eat pretty healthy’. One thing i have learnt when working with unhealthy clients is that they think they ‘eat pretty healthy’. I can guarantee one thing, people who say that don’t eat pretty healthy. But after all the confusion about what is and isn’t healthy, i don’t blame them.
  5. We don’t focus on our health because we are taught to rely on doctors for health advice. We believe that doctors must know more about ourselves than we do because ‘they trained for years in medical school’. Doctors deal with the symptoms, not the cause or the real problem. The good news is I think most of us are now learning (unfortunately through bad experiences) that doctors don’t necessarily have all the answers in promoting good human health. Hence why natural alternatives are playing a larger role in healing the body than ever before. There is a real want for good, truthful health information and it’s really exciting.UNLESS it is an emergency though. In emergencies, western medicine is at the forefront. If you break your arm and you need it re-set, eating lots of broccoli and kale won’t help you. It’s when it comes to chronic issues like inflammation or heart disease where doctors are not the answer.
  6. We wait until something goes wrong to do something about our health! We wait until we get diagnosed with arthritis to start learning about bodily inflammation and its effects. We don’t learn about the effects of heart disease until we experience a heart attack. We invest basically NO money into our health other than our health insurance (which doesn’t count). This is the most important point. I beg you. I’m on my hands and knees right now pleading that you don’t make this mistake. Don’t wait until something goes wrong! Be proactive and take action to prevent these issues so you don’t end up in pain, overweight and sleeping badly or even worse. Because if you aren’t proactive, you might not get a second chance. I know too many people who have been lucky with their first heart attack… THEN they change their lifestyle. Things in nature take time. So when we do things that our body doesn’t like, it takes time for the body to register these problems. If our body made us feel like what it’s like to have throat cancer when we tried our first cigarette, i’m sure there would be a lot less people smoking. So the only way to be proactive is to learn about what is good and bad for the body. There isn’t a simple test you can do to find out straight away whether eating a daily donut will result in a heart attack in 20 years. You have to seek out the information. Do it. If you chose not to, this is the mistake that is going to cost you.The average monetary cost of Coronary Artery Grafts-Bypass surgery is $38,000. Plus the cost of you being out of work, the stress on you, the stress on your family, the fact you might not survive the bypass surgery. Compared with the conscious decision to look after yourself, eat the right foods, detox in your sauna and life a more active lifestyle.
  7. Once something does go wrong, we don’t commit to making real change in our life. A recent study of 250,000 Aussies aged over 45 showed that after being diagnosed with type two diabetes, patients made NO changes  to their lifestyle to reduce the impacts of type two diabetes. NONE. Everyone continued smoking the same amount of cigarettes, exercise the minimal amount they were and didn’t change their diet.

I grew up seeing the end result of a lifetime of people making these mistakes. In this business, I am reminded daily that the people who don’t prioritise their health, never put value on doing so and don’t do their own research into what is healthy for them are generally the people who end up in pain, overweight, sleeping poorly or worse. So please, if some of these sound familiar or resonate with you, don’t wait to take action. Don’t make an excuse as to why you can’t stop making these mistakes today.
